Ah, winter in NZ. The land of stunning landscapes and recently for some, beautiful aurora skies! But winter is truly here and most of us are already feeling the brrr!
Keeping your home warm and cozy throughout the season doesn’t have to involve high heating bills. Here are some tips to help keep you toasty and comfortable this winter:
Think of your house like a puffer jacket: The better insulated it is, the less energy you’ll need to heat it. Invest in insulating your ceiling, walls, and underfloor if possible. This might seem like a big upfront cost, but it can significantly reduce your heating bills in the long run. Check out government initiatives like the Healthy Homes Subsidy for both heating & insulation grants.
Seal the Deal: Drafty windows and doors are gateways for heat loss. Consider draught-proofing strips, heavy curtains, or thermal blinds to keep the warm air in and the cold air out. Even a simple door snake by the entryway can make a surprising difference.
Harness the Sunshine: Open those curtains and blinds during the day to let the free heat from the sun warm up your living space. Close them at dusk to trap the warmth inside.
Get Smart with Heating: If you have a heat pump (& if you don’t, have a chat with us), set it to an efficient temperature (around 19°C is ideal) and utilise timers to avoid unnecessary heating when you’re not home. Consider night-time rates for cheaper electricity and pre-heat your house before you get home.
Electric Blankets & Hot Water Bottles: Good ole kiwi classics! Cuddle up under an electric blanket on the couch or use a hot water bottle for an extra dose of warmth.
